New York Divorce Lawyer Explains Who Will Get to Keep the Engagement Ring
As a dedicated New York Divorce Lawyer, I am often asked who gets to keep the engagement ring. The engagement ring is considered a gift in contemplation of marriage, meaning that it represents a promise that you will get married someday. When a wedding is called off before it could happen, the ring is returned. If, however, the parties got married, the event they contemplated actually happened, and the ring became the property of the recipient. In certain circumstances, however – such as if the ring were an heirloom of the giver’s family – it would be returned to the giver.
